Curriculum

Mathematics at Homai School

At our school, we’ve chosen to implement PRIME Mathematics because it offers a structured, research-based approach that enhances students’ understanding and mastery of Mathematical concepts. Aligned with the New Zealand Curriculum, PRIME emphasizes problem-solving, critical thinking, and a step-by-step progression that builds students’ confidence and fluency in Mathematics. Its clear learning pathways and consistent language ensure coherence across year levels, making it easier for both teachers and students to track and celebrate progress. Through PRIME, we are equipping our learners with the skills they need to think mathematically and succeed in an ever-changing world.

If you would like to learn more about PRIME Mathematics, here is a link to some resources that can help you understand the programme better. Scholastic New Zealand – PRIME Mathematics Overview – This provides an introduction to the programme and its benefits. It also gives you details on how PRIME aligns with the New Zealand Curriculum and supports effective teaching and learning, offers insights into how PRIME can be effectively integrated into classroom teaching. It explains how PRIME aligns with national standards, ensuring students meet key learning objectives and answers common questions you may have about the programme.

In Connected Curriculum students explore topics that make meaningful connections with their lives.

Through the inquiry process, students form investigative questions, gather and analyse information, generate solutions and take social action.

Writing is a big focus at Homai again this year! We have Vision Education Facilitators working alongside our teachers to further develop their knowledge and skills in teaching writing. We never stop learning and growing at Homai!

So what is my child learning in writing? In the first three years at Homai your child will be developing the skills and strategies to learn how to write. As they move up into the senior school, students are learning to use these skills and strategies to write a variety of texts across the curriculum. This term they will be writing explanations and procedural texts as part of their science inquiry looking at plants.

How can I help my child in writing? Encourage your child to write often at home. This may be simple tasks such as, shopping lists, notes and emails. Your child could keep a daily journal to record their activities, thoughts and feelings. They could also write about the story they are reading and share their writing with the whole family.
